Pinterest can be tricky. I know this because I pretty much live and breathe it on a daily basis.

When someone reaches out and wants help with their website traffic and their Pinterest profile, there are three super common mistakes I always see.

They are looking at Pinterest all wrong.

By this I mean they are looking at Pinterest as a Social Media platform. It is not. It works a lot like Google, but it’s all visual. It is a search engine. See that? That is your smart search! Where you look up information such as recipes, parenting tips, ways to make money from home, and more. But! They are some new features Pinterest is rolling out that gives it a little bit of a “Social Media” aspect.

However, it is still a SEARCH ENGINE.

The pins you see appearing below it, on your homepage is your smart feed. It pulls information based on your searches. So how do these pins appear? How does Pinterest know what you may be interested in? SEO. These pins contain keywords that you have searched for or that pertain to topics you are searching for.

Which brings me to number two. Your profile and pins are not set up for optimized SEO.

Here is a pin that was uploaded well over a year ago. (which also shows that you should not delete old pins) As this pin started picking up traction again in the last couple of weeks and I have not been promoting it or even scheduling it. And it has a pretty decent conversion rate based off saves VS clicks.

Why is it circulating again and appearing in so many smart feeds? I took trending keywords that people in my target audience are searching for and added them to my pins description. And because of that, when a user is searing for, “how to increase your blog’s traffic” my pin appears!

But not just your pins need to be set up for optimal SEO. So do your boards. And I can not tell you how many boards I see with either no description at all or the description is simply what I like to call “stuffed with keywords.” Sorry to burst your bubble but a description that looks like this: “Blogging, blogging for beginners, increase blog traffic, make money online…” is not proper SEO.

Yes, those are keywords users search for. But Pinterest prefers them to be long-tailed keywords. Keywords made into a pretty little searchable sentence like, “How to increase your blog’s traffic with Pinterest.”

Ever see a board appear in your smart feed like this?

That board is appearing because of the boards SEO. Believe it or not, you don’t have to have a super long paragraph to improve your boards SEO. It can be short and simple. Less is more.

And last but not least, you aren’t learning from your metrics.

Your pin metrics are there for a reason. So you can see how each specific pin is performing. Now, this pins conversion, when I look at close-ups vs. clicks only has a 17% conversion rate.

Even though the number of saves vs. clicks conversion is great, I want at least 50% of the people who view this pin close up to click through to my website to read the post.

When a pin isn’t converting the way I want it to, I think about how I can change different elements of my pin to encourage a click through. So for this pin, maybe I am giving too much away showing the freebie on the image. Maybe by wording it a little differently and taking out the image, it could help the conversion.

Now, will this work? I have ZERO clue! But, this is how I figure out what works! Trial and error!

Pinterest, unfortunately, takes a lot more than this, but these are a few steps that can get you moving in the right direction.
