Why Ads are hurting your blog’s traffic, and the potential for income.

Why Ads are hurting your blog’s traffic, and the potential for income.

{This post may contain affiliate links. That means I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. See my disclosure for details.}

You guys, there were a few reasons I was inspired to write this post this week.

One. Since It’s the holiday season, I was busy searching Pinterest for some new Christmas cookie recipes. I am a sucker for a good Christmas cookie tray, as I am sure most of you are too 😉

Anyways…

After about an hour of clicking to new blogs trying to jot down new recipes, I was SO over it!

Why?

Y’all I am not even joking when I say that I had to X out of over 90% of these cookie recipe posts even before I was able to jot down the recipe. Why? THEY HAD TOO MANY ADS! These bloggers had so many dang ads on their website; the post took FOREVER to load!

Can ads make you money?

Yes. But they have to be done the RIGHT way. STOP with the ad overkill!

There is a way to tastefully place ads on your website, so they don’t hurt your loading time AND don’t block your reader’s view.

Try and stick to 3 ads MAX per page. With one or two being in your sidebar.

STOP WITH THE POP-UP ADS! That is me yelling at you. These are NOT making you money; these are hurting your traffic, loading time and BOUNCE RATE!

I bet you that 90% of my views didn’t even register on these websites I visited because the overkill of ads made me leave even before it could count as a view.

No joke.

Think about this for a min…

Are you making money from your ads? If not, get rid of them. You could have a killer post with some high paying affiliate links in them. But no one is ever going to get to that affiliate link if they have to close out of 10 ads and your website is taking 20 min to load.

Go to some of the big time bloggers website. What don’t you see? ADS!

OR if there are ads, they are tastefully placed. Too many ads also make you look SUPER spammy.

Trust me when I say, you have a much higher chance of making a decent amount of money each month (no matter your blogging niche) by focusing your efforts on writing killer posts with affiliate links in them.

Again, I am not saying to nix ads out of your life. I am saying, take a look at where they are and how many you have. Look at your bounce rate. Is it hurting? Take some ads down. I PROMISE you; it will help!

How to make time for your blog when you have kids!

How to make time for your blog when you have kids!

{This post may contain affiliate links which means I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. See my disclosure for details.}

Just like most Mothers, there are days I wish I could clone myself. This way one of me could do all of my Motherhood related tasks like grocery shopping, laundry, homework, after-school activities, room-mom tasks, etc. And the other me could focus on my blog!

Unfortunately, that is not possible, bummer right?  Over the past couple of years, I have been able to find a pretty good work/mom life balance. And 80% of the time it works great, but there are still days of complete chaos, and I’ve learned to embrace it and give myself a little grace when needed.

I have two kids, My son is almost 7 and will be going into 1st grade this fall, and my daughter is 3 and will thankfully be starting two days a week pre-school this fall as well! That means I will have eight solid hours a week with no kids! WHAT! And I forgot to mention my husband is deployed, A LOT. So most of the time I am solo parenting.

As my blog and marketing business grows I find myself getting more and more stressed about not having enough time to work. Or I feel guilty for maybe working too much when I should be playing with my kids! The struggle is real mommas!

Business Goals

Most days my kids wake up between 7:30/8:00 am. As long as I force myself to go to bed at a normal hour and don’t stay up until 1 am drinking merlot and binge-watching the latest Netflix series, I usually can get up around 5:30/6:00 am and get a decent start on my day without any interruptions.

I write down my one BIG business goal for the day, whether that be working on a chapter in the VA course I am currently creating or something as simple as scheduling pins for the week. I try and make my goal very reachable.

Then I jot down my second business goal. Again, I make these goals as achievable as possible. My first business goal is the most important and one I need to get done. My second business goal isn’t as important, and if I don’t get around to completing that task, I move it to the next day.

Mom Goals

I always have two “Mom goals” a day. As silly as this sounds, it has helped a lot when it comes to me feeling like I am a C- Mom at best. My number one Mom goal is one I make sure to achieve no matter what. I like to have one of my Mom goals be something fun, like going to the beach or the pool with the kids or jumping on the trampoline for 20 min. This way I know I am dedicating some part of my day to making sure my kids know I love them and can still be a fun Mom!

My second Mom goal is usually along the lines of; meal planning, laundry (like getting ALL the laundry done, folded and put away) or cleaning the bathrooms. Again realistic, but by laying out my goals like this each day, I feel SO much more organized and on track in my business and my life.

I LOVE planners and laying everything out. So I took my business goals and Mom goals list and made it into a pretty printable PDF for you! This way you can lay out your week, stick that goal sheet on your fridge and get Sh%t done! (that’s me giving you a virtual fist bump!)

4 ways to make money with your blog THIS month!

4 ways to make money with your blog THIS month!

{This post may contain affiliate links, which means I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. See my disclosure for details.}

I am sure you have read a million and five posts on how to make money with your blog. But I want to help you make money with your blog THIS month! And you don’t need a lot of traffic for this to work!

First things first.

Make sure you have a clean website and also make sure it’s EASY to navigate. Not too many ads! If ads keep popping up when someone is trying to read content, most likely you will lose a reader and a page view.

Okay, let’s get started…

  1. Find your highest performing posts and add those affiliate links! There are a couple of ways to do this. One, by looking at your website analytics to see which post is bringing in the most traffic. Another way is to look at your Pinterest analytics and see your “top pin impressions” from the last 30 days.

Try and focus on higher paying affiliate programs, this way you don’t have to convert hundreds of sales to make money! Share-A-Sale is my favorite site for this! They have thousands of affiliate programs organized by category! They also lay out how much each program pays, which makes it easy for you to join higher paying programs or programs that have recurring monthly commissions.

2. Make good use of your sidebar! Here you can showcase other high performing posts that also have affiliate links! You can also advertise any services you offer here, like VA services, or other items you sell! Make it easy for your readers to access it! A lot of times I am browsing around someone’s site, and it takes me a while of looking around to find out that the blogger has a course, or has an excellent Etsy store!

3. Have a resources page! Even if you don’t blog about blogging you can add affiliate links to your website host such as SiteGround, or links to the pin scheduler you use like TailWind. This way if one of your readers also wants to start a parenting blog, you have provided her with the resources to do so! You can also add links to products you love if you are a beauty blogger or any niche for that matter!

  • My top 10 must have cooking products!
  • The five killer skincare products I can’t live without.
  • 20 must-have items for when the baby comes.
  • Three items that make traveling internationally a breeze!

Get what I am saying? These too can be added to your resources page!

4. Utilize ALL of your social media outlets! Even your personal FB page! This step is SO often forgotten! You know that high performing post you added affiliate links to? Promote it! And no I don’t mean pay to promote it but share it on your FB business page, your personal FB page, create a killer pin, take a fancy Instagram photo and then say, “check out the link in my bio to get this look for less.” GET creative!

EXPAND your reach girl!

You can even directly add an affiliate link to your FB post if you don’t want to write a blog post! “Guys! Check out this cooking tool that cuts meal prep time in HALF!”

You have to make sure you note that it’s an affiliate link.

I am not saying you are going to get rich overnight. But heck, how sweet would an extra $50 be this month? Hello, babysitter money!

4 simple ways to get readers to stay on your website longer!

4 simple ways to get readers to stay on your website longer!

{This post may contain affiliate links, which means I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. See my disclosure for details.}

Traffic, traffic, traffic. The one thing all of us bloggers crave. There are many different ways to obtain it, but once you do, how do you get your reader to stick around your site for even longer?

Yes getting a pageview is excellent, but what if one pageview turned into 5? Or what if that reader turns into a sale? Or a client? Or makes an affiliate purchase? Bu getting them to stick around your site even longer, they can see more of your content AND other services you may offer.

So how do you do it?

One.

Make sure your site is EASY to navigate. One of the first things I tell 99% of my clients is that they have TOO many ads on their website. This is one of the number one things that can lose you a reader in less than 5 seconds. Now I am not saying get rid of your ads altogether, but don’t overload your posts with them.

If you do keep your ads, only keep 1-2 per page, with one being on the sidebar and one being in the middle or preferably at the end of your blog posts. If your readers have to keep clicking out of adds or scrolling through them to actually read your content, the likeliness of them sticking around to read more is slim to none.

Two.

If you can, add backlinks to other posts that pertain to the current post you are writing. So going back to my first example, here is a post I wrote on how ads could be hurting your blog traffic. Now, while you are reading this post, you may click on the backlink to check out the other post I wrote on ads. Turning one pageview into two. See how that works?

You only want to add links to posts that pertain to your current topic. But this is a GREAT way to keep readers on your site and reading more of your content!

Three.

Freebies/lead magnets. Offering something for free such as a weekly meal plan or social media schedule will not only build your email list, but it will bring your readers back for more! You are not only showing them you create quality content, but you now have a way to send your excellent content directly to their inbox each week/month.

I TRY and post one new blog post a week, and as soon as I have that scheduled to publish, I also schedule it to be sent to my email list!

A lot of times I will suggest other posts, products or services at the end of the email to bring that loyal follower back to my website for more!

Four.

Two things here. 1. Make it clear what you do and what they can get from your site. I realize this is more of a “homepage” thing, but I can’t even count how many times I have visited a blog and honestly wasn’t clear on what they were about. I always tell my clients to think of their home pages as a short and sweet resume! Who are you and what can I get from your blog? Here is my homepage so you can get a rough idea!

2. Social SHARE buttons AND “Follow Me” buttons! Make it easy for your readers to find you online AND share your awesome content so even more people will visit!

Plain and simple, make it easy for your readers to read your posts, navigate your site and share your content. Less is more my friends!

Here is why you shouldn’t give up on your blog.

Here is why you shouldn’t give up on your blog.

{This post may contain affiliate links, this means I may make a small commission at no extra cost to you. See my disclosure for details.}

This is a post that has not-a-thang to do with Pinterest.

I recently listened to Rachel Hollis’s book. Girl, Wash Your Face, on my recent road trip to my Brother’s in New Hampshire. You guys, if you haven’t read/listened to this book, you need to, right now. Drop what you are doing and get it.

If you have been following me from day 1, you know my blog started out as Motherhood blog and in no way shape or form did I plan on turning it into a business. Sure, in the back of my mind I dreamed of making it into something big, but that was a dream. It wasn’t until six months into my “blogging” career (if you want to call it that) that I decided I was going to change direction, and write about what I know, marketing.

I thought to myself, “every one of these big-time bloggers had to start somewhere.” They had to start from the bottom and work their way to the top. So why couldn’t I do the same?

Well, to be completely honest I was totally and completely terrified. I didn’t have much money to invest in my blog, and I truthfully thought, “who the heck would want to listen to my advice?” What if no one read my content? What if no one bought my course? What if I failed miserably and wasted months of time and money and effort and tears. What if.

Thankfully, I didn’t let my “what ifs” stop me.

I went for it. And guys, let me tell you it has not been easy. I am going to repeat that, it has not in any way, shape or form, been easy.

If any blogger out there is telling you it’s easy peasy to start blogging and make a bazillion dollars right off the bat, they are lying to you. If you want to turn your blog into a business, it will take more work than you can ever imagine. And then some.

But you want to know what? It’s so worth it. If you had told me two years ago, I would be asked to speak at an online Pinterest conference and labeled as “one of the worlds top 10 Pinterest experts.” I would have laughed in your face. If you had told me two years ago that I would get 100’s of emails a week asking me for Pinterest advice and tips and just venting about how hard blogging can be, I would have thought you were crazy.

If you had told me two years ago that I would turn my blog into a full-time business, with thousands of awesome loyal followers, women, and men all with the same goal, to write. To write about what they are passionate about, to take their small Etsy shop and turn it into a big business, or to use their blogs to make extra income to help build their child’s college fund. I would have stared at you with my blank “you crazy,” face. (My kids see that face more than they would like to.)

If you had told me, they would follow ME and MY blog, I would have questioned your sanity.

But guess what? They do. And it’s amazing. And you want to know what?

It’s been SO DAMN HARD.

I am the type of person who is VERY hard on myself. A downfall of my personality that I try and work on daily. Want to know what has probably been the hardest part of this journey? Other than trying to balance my business with being a solo mom 90% of the time and staying home with both my kids. Online negativity.

I see so many posts about it, and I know first hand how hard it is NOT to take it personally. Out of the 100’s of amazing reviews and emails I receive about how my course has helped someone. I have had received three not-so-nice emails. Three. Three emails, that I still to this day think about. Three emails that made me sit on the floor next to my laptop and cry. Three emails that made me question, “should I be doing this?”

Now I know you are probably thinking, “Megan, three emails is nothing.” I get that. But the bad words stick so much more than the good.

And this is where Rachel’s book opened my eyes. I think I needed to hear every single word she spoke in that book. Nothing is easy. Nothing. My 5-year plan is to turn Love Family Health into a BIG business. I want employees that see my vision as clearly as I see theirs. This is a dream that I WILL accomplish. And I wake up every single morning with that dream on the horizon.

I know it’s going to be hard as hell. Heck, trying to run my blog now is hard as hell. But the fact that I started on my own and took it from nothing to what is it now is SO freeeking rewarding you guys.

So, if you are just starting, or you have been blogging for years but feel like you aren’t making any headway, KEEP GOING. I’m begging you to keep trying. And yes, you may keep failing, but eventually, you won’t. If something doesn’t work, try something else. I can’t tell you how many times I have failed. MISERABLY. And still, do.

And you want to know what I did with those three not so nice emails? I used them. To make my blog and my courses EVEN BETTER. So thank you negative nancy’s. You have helped me to be a better blogger AND businesswoman. And for that I am grateful. And you want to know what? I may get more negative emails, and I have to be okay with that. Because I have to be ok knowing that as much as I want to, I can’t make everyone happy, and that’s ok.

You’re in charge of your future. YOU. So make it exactly how you want it to be.

Okay, enough with my sappy post. I wanted to write this to say thank you. Thank you to those who have followed me from day one, who have walked with me on this journey and have supported me every step of the way! You are amazing!
